This week I had the opportunity to go to the Men’s Advance in Stillwater. This year’s theme was on my favorite Bible character- Joseph. Do you realize the Bible has no negative comment about Joseph? Joseph was a man who lived right with God, through any circumstance! He did not let his environment dictate how he was gong to act. Did you read that? I am going to say it again:
He did not let his environment dictate how he was going to act.
Pastor Wayne Hardy made the comment that “our actions need to be because of an internal Spirit, not an external circumstance.” That means that you should do what is right because the Holy Spirit lives inside of you…not because the people around you are telling you to. For instance, do you come to church because you know it is what God commands (Spirit)? Or do you come to church because your parents/ wife/ husband makes you (Circumstance/Environment) ? Do you read your Bible because you want to grow in the Lord (Spirit)? Are you praying because of a bad situation in your life (Environment) ? See Joseph was a great man because he did what was right. He did right because he walked with the Lord. He did not do what was right because people were making him. In fact he had every opportunity to do what was wrong, yet he stuck it out. So if your whole world changed…and you were allowed to do anything you wanted…how many things would you stop doing? How many things would you do that you know are wrong?
I encourage you this week to have integrity. Do what is right regardless of your environment.
I normally am not encouraged by everyone’s opinion on how our government should be run. There are a thousand talk shows with opinions on what Obama, or Bush are doing wrong. They all give us these “critiques” as if they were the President life would be better for all of us.
However, I believe we are to respect the office of the President, and I don’t believe it is our right to bad mouth him. Regardless of how poorly we feel he is doing; the truth is, we as a nation, put him into office. Secondly, none of us are in his shoes, nor do we work with the information he works with.
What is truly amazing about this clip is that, for once, someone is not pointing the finger at the White House, but rather to us, and our lack of respect for God in this nation. Please take a few minutes to watch this clip.Government replacing God?
This week we remembered the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I don’t know if you remember that day, but I do. Some of our most important buildings were hit by 4 airplanes that were attempting to destroy the fabric of our nation. Almost 3000 people died.
Do you remember what happened after those attacks? People started going to church, and praying. People were nice to each other again, and people were proud to be American. It was like things got better in America.
You know, we should be careful. We as Christians can do that too. Sometimes we have something tragic happen in our life and we get scared. So we start to pray more, and be more obedient. We start listening in church more, and we desire to be really good Christians. The problem with that is God wants us to be like that all the time, not just when something sad happens. If you are living like God doesn’t care what you are doing, than he will wake you up! However, you don’t want God to have to get your attention. He should already have it. Decide that you are going to be a great Christian because he died for you and loves you. Not because you are scared God is going to hurt you.
This week I posted on my website and Twitter, a thought provoking question.
Why do we have high expectations for sin’s gratification (pleasure), but low expectations for our Christian growth?
Meaning, why do we think when we do something sinful we’re going to really enjoy it. All of us have done this before. We think we will be happy if we look at something we shouldn’t or take something that is not ours. We think we will feel better if we listen to music we are not supposed to, or involve ourselves in activities that are downright destructive. The reason people sin, is just that…we think it will pay big. We all know what the Bible says though. “There is pleasure in sin for a season.”
However on the other side of the statement we set very low expectations about our spiritual growth. We think that if we are no good at memorizing verses, than “oh well”. If you are scared to share your faith with someone, than that is ok. If you are nervous about giving, than it is just one of your weaknesses. What kind of thinking is that?! If we are to grow as Christians, we have to set high expectations for ourselves. You may not be as strong in some areas of the Christian life, but that does not mean it is hopeless. It means you work harder. The truth is we should set high expectations on everything we want to be good at. If you want to memorize better, plan on memorizing a whole chapter. If you want to be a better soulwinner, talk to everyone you come in contact with. Set high expectations. If you miss them, you are still better off than if your expectations were low!
1. They never come at an opportune time. This would include on vacation in another state, on our way home to get there in time for church the next morning.
2. Even with your guard up, surprises come. You can’t avoid surprises. It shows me just how feeble we are. I can be as attentive as possible, and still get in a car accident. God ultimately controls everything, and it is better to trust in him, than your ability to control a situation. You will fail sometimes.
3. You cannot always see the damage your choices make. What I thought was a little accident, actually destroyed our Radiator and cooling system. What appeared to be just a fender bender was actually serious enough to throw our radiator into the engine block and cut some lines. IT also caused all those in the car to have back or neck problems. So also, the choices we make in life. They do not always seem consequential but you cannot see all the ramifications.
4. If you are going to hit someone, hit a church van…they are nicer about it. I admit, I was a jerk for hitting a church van filled with retired ladies going to the mall for a day. However, could you think of kinder people to hit? Sure I wanted to jump off a bridge, but they were so sweet about it all. Not one glare or gesture to insinuate anger. That helped soften the blow.
5. If you are going to hit someone, don’t hit a van full of people. I know, this totally contradicts the previous statement, but did you know that the Police are required to get names, addressess, and testimony for all involved? Imagine 15 Senior ladies all having to give all of their information…yeah. It was painfully long.
6. Owning a car is expensive. Period.
7. Wives have a way of making every situation laughable. So here I am, almost in tears over the fact I just crashed our car in a different state. We are stuck hundreds of miles from home. I know nothing about cars. I know nothing about Springfield, MO. I am trying to pretend I am a mechanic. and I am broke. My wife and her sister walked over to Kohl’s to “cool off” while, her sister’s boyfriend and I are buying anything at Wal-Mart that looks like it might help us fix the car. When i get a phone call. “Sweetheart, I know this is not the best time to ask but…can I buy a dress? It’s on sale, and they are not charging tax today.” I at this point could do nothing but laugh. Thanks sweetheart.
8. Paying for good insurance is worth it. Cutting insurance costs by cutting corners and skimping down your policy may seem like the wise financial investment, but rarely do you benefit from that. Thankfully when we got here, we were used to paying high cost from insurance in California. We decided to get all the bells and whistles, and are we ever thankful. Geico took great care of us, and I am glad to be a customer. However…make sure you get rental car assistance when you get a policy (forgot that one, and boy is that an expensive out of pocket cost).
9. Problems can be viewed as oppositions or opportunities. It is comforting to know we are having trials. It keeps us close to the Lord. C.H.Spurgeon said “Often our trials act as a thorn hedge to keep us in the good pasture; but our prosperity is a gap through which we go astray. ” I could be upset about it all, or realize that it is somehow for my good, and trust God that he knows what he is doing.
10.Things are just things. When all is said and done…it is just a car. My wife is safe, I am safe, Rebekah and Travis are safe, and we got home. The car did its job. It kept us safe. Is it a bummer? yeah. Is it the end of the world? no. Will it matter in eternity? no. Will God take care of us? Always.
After not having posted for weeks, I thought I would say Hi. I have not forgot about this website. If anyone reads it. I am still waiting to learn how to do all this stuff.
Recently my youth pastor posted on his website some fantastic articles on time management principles. What so impressed me about them was not their unique and creative approach, but rather their simplicity.
Growing up, playing sports- it was always interesting when we would revert to practicing fundamentals. My varsity basketball coach, Curt Beeson, would often have us work on fundamentals. We are not talking about a kid’s city league here, we are talking about young men who have played basketball for a long time, and have basically mastered the fundamentals. Ironically, whenever we did work on fundamentals in practice, we always played better in games.
Looking at time management, often we are guilty of the same thing. We get so advanced on strategy and planning that we forget about the basics. Sometimes we get so locked into finding a system that works- a Blackberry, a DayRunner, the Covey System, you fill in the blank. The newest and coolest gadget or system is not always the solution. Getting back to the basics can be however. Why are we organizing? What works for us? Am I missing the big picture?
I believe that Bro. Schmidt did a fantastic job addressing and explaining these questions. For a better written and encouraging read on time management, I would encourage you to check it out. Click on the link: http://caryschmidt.com/
Finally! We had a week of sunshine…I love it. It is ridiculous how often the weather changes around here. I really need a tan though, so I am glad it is finally starting to heat up (I say that until I have to start doing yard work again).
You know seasons are not always desirable? If you think about Chicago…I am sure they do not always look forward to winters filled with freezing temperatures and snow! IF you live in Iraq, I am guessing they are not too excited about 125° sunny days. On the opposite side of the spectrum-Think about the most desirable places to live. Hawaii? the Caribbean? Jamaica? All of these places have the same weather all year around. Nice, warm weather.
You know there can be changes of seasons in your heart too? Sometimes we allow our hearts to get cold and bitter. We have a winter heart. This is where life most of the time is just bearable, but at times it is plain miserable. We are cold to everything that matters.
There are other times in our life when we get warm and sometimes even on fire for the Lord. We have a summer in our heart. These seasons are what life is all about. This is the desirable time of year. This is when things are going well and you are seeing God’s blessing in your life. You are walking so close to the Lord you can almost touch him. All your prayers are being answered, and you are getting things out of God’s word. We love these times. These seasons are what we call “The Hawaii of our heart. “ A desire to serve God is not difficult or punishment…it truly is when you feel most free, and happy. Your great designer longs for you to have a “Hawaii heart”…not a “Chicago heart”!
Move close to God, and do your best to stay there!
