Lessons From Joseph

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

This week I had the opportunity to go to the Men’s Advance in Stillwater. This year’s theme was on my favorite Bible character- Joseph. Do you realize the Bible has no negative comment about Joseph? Joseph was a man who lived right with God, through any circumstance! He did not let his environment dictate how he was gong to act. Did you read that? I am going to say it again:

He did not let his environment dictate how he was going to act.

Pastor Wayne Hardy made the comment that “our actions need to be because of an internal Spirit, not an external circumstance.” That means that you should do what is right because the Holy Spirit lives inside of you…not because the people around you are telling you to. For instance, do you come to church because you know it is what God commands (Spirit)? Or do you come to church because your parents/ wife/ husband makes you (Circumstance/Environment) ? Do you read your Bible because you want to grow in the Lord (Spirit)? Are you praying because of a bad situation in your life (Environment) ?   See Joseph was a great man because he did what was right. He did right because  he walked with the Lord. He did not do what was right because people were making him. In fact he had every opportunity to do what was wrong, yet he stuck it out. So if your whole world changed…and you were allowed to do anything you wanted…how many things would you stop doing? How many things would you do that you know are wrong?

I encourage you this week to have integrity. Do what is right regardless of your environment.

Thoughts on 9/11

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

This week we remembered the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I don’t know if you remember that day, but I do. Some of our most important buildings were hit by 4 airplanes that were attempting to destroy the fabric of our nation. Almost 3000 people died.
Do you remember what happened after those attacks? People started going to church, and praying. People were nice to each other again, and people were proud to be American. It was like things got better in America.
You know, we should be careful. We as Christians can do that too. Sometimes we have something tragic happen in our life and we get scared. So we start to pray more, and be more obedient. We start listening in church more, and we desire to be really good Christians. The problem with that is God wants us to be like that all the time, not just when something sad happens. If you are living like God doesn’t care what you are doing, than he will wake you up! However, you don’t want God to have to get your attention. He should already have it. Decide that you are going to be a great Christian because he died for you and loves you. Not because you are scared God is going to hurt you.

Seasons of the Heart

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

lookingbackFinally! We had a week of sunshine…I love it. It is ridiculous how often the weather changes around here. I really need a tan though, so I am glad it is finally starting to heat up (I say that until I have to start doing yard work again).

You know seasons are not always desirable? If you think about Chicago…I am sure they do not always look forward to winters filled with freezing temperatures and snow! IF you live in Iraq, I am guessing they are not too excited about 125° sunny days. On the opposite side of the spectrum-Think about the most desirable places to live. Hawaii? the Caribbean? Jamaica? All of these places have the same weather all year around. Nice, warm weather.

You know there can be changes of seasons in your heart too? Sometimes we allow our hearts to get cold and bitter. We have a winter heart. This is where life most of the time is just bearable, but at times it is plain miserable. We are cold to everything that matters.

There are other times in our life when we get warm and sometimes even on fire for the Lord. We have a summer in our heart. These seasons are what life is all about. This is the desirable time of year. This is when things are going well and you are seeing God’s blessing in your life. You are walking so close to the Lord you can almost touch him. All your prayers are being answered, and you are getting things out of God’s word. We love these times. These seasons are what we call “The Hawaii of our heart. “ A desire to serve God is not difficult or punishment…it truly is when you feel most free, and happy. Your great designer longs for you to have a “Hawaii heart”…not a “Chicago heart”!

Move close to God, and do your best to stay there!
